He lost his wall. He lost his army. He lost his kingdom in nine days. So he rode into a forest that men have not entered in a thousand years, to ask an army that has every reason on earth to watch him die. The great northern wall has fallen. A hundred thousand are coming south, and they do not want tribute, or ground, or surrender. They burn the earth so that nothing can use it after. Varic, last king of men, is carried out of the snow half dead by the only soldier alive who served his father. What is left of his people run south to Gruin — a black crag with one gate and four hundred men to hold it. Varic rides the other way. Alone. Into the deep forest.
